Can Google+ Local ‘Out-Social’ Facebook?
Andrew Shotland, 6/19/2012
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
On May 30 Google Places merged with Google+ to become Google+ Local. This was a much-anticipated step in Google’s strategy both to evolve Google+ as well as to get in on the growing trend of social local marketing, by providing a social media channel into Google for local businesses. At a high level, this could be the start of a strategy to pull consumers into Google+ via business users, who will find value by using Google+ tools to communicate with customers while also achieving better search engine rankings in the process. This Advisory examines the changes in user interface, the implications for SEO for both SMBs and local directories, the strategic benefits of this move, potential business opportunities, and some predictions for the future evolution of Google+ Local.
